This is a really interesting question. I hadn't made the connection between vegetarianism and emasculation, which is silly considering how emphatically I detest "Hungry Man Dinners" et al., and what they mean for the male identity and nutritional health.

It's more of the same of women's identities being subordinated to their bodies, and men's bodies being subordinated to their masculinity. re: combat roles, socially-approved aggressiveness, rape, and more

Per your question, I think I can safely say that this is *not* the answer: http://www.endlesssimmer.com/2009/04/10/paging-peta-vegetarianism-is-not-the-new-weight-loss-secret/

I have actually just started reading Carol Adams' "the Sexual Politics of Meat" and it is fascinating.

I borrowed it from Weldon and I believe that Ashley is next in line for it... unless you want to battle Kirk vs. Spock style for it ;-)

And I would be more than glad to discuss balancing veg*ism eating choices with you.

I love this. I am going to become a regular visitor to your blog, Xtine. Perhaps I will even start blogging on my own successfully!

I have seriously been considering going back to veg*nism and it was very reassuring to read this. When I first went vegetarian, it didn't occur to me how it factored into gender perception. I actually went vegetarian because my idol at the time, Gandhi (I used to be so idealistic!), was a vegetarian. It certainly wasn't solely women's domain, in my view. Yet, gradually, over time, I realized a number of people were surprised that I as a man was a vegetarian. Some people outright stated it.
I'm also surprised at how quickly men defend their meat-eating habits. I've mentioned before how it always bugged me when I'd say I was a vegetarian and immediately the people around me would say why they "could never give up meat." More often than not, those people were men.
I have heard of a book called "The Sexual Politics of Meat"-- I think I will look it up this summer.

I would really like to talk to you regarding balancing one's veg*nism with a partner's lack thereof.
